What kind of gift should I send as a "Thank You" to a friend and his family for being so hospitable to me....

...They have 3 kids, 2 girls and 1 boy. All of them are over the age of 10.
Yeah I was thinking about the dinner thing, they are from the south so I'm not good with this gift idea stuff.
Oh I forgot to tell you all, I visited them in Texas, I live in New York. Thats why its hard to pick out a restaurant unless I ask them which they like.

Have you ever gotten a gift....?...

...and when you opened it you had absolutely no idea what it was? That happened to me once and I did some pretty creative lying to get around it. The gift was from my mother -in-law...go figure right. Anyhow....my birthday is quickly approaching and I am gearing up my thankful face for whatever "surprises" come my way. As always..funniest or most interesting gets the 10!
Apparently my mother in law thought that I liked to do crafts..I have no idea how she thought that or how she figured with 2 toddlers that i would even have the time if I wanted to. Anyhow..it was some sort of a tool for cutting and burning and heck I don't know what else it did. I was baffled. I held onto it for a couple years in a drawer somewhere and then sold it at a yard sale for a buck. She is probably still waiting for that great craft she thought I would make for her with it :-)

You take a Barbie Doll, knit a large dress out of yarn that will cover a roll of TP. You then can place the doll into the center of the roll and the dress covers the TP.

I cam across a link that has a partial photo of what I am describing."

I'm going to a wedding for my boyfriend's half-brother this weekend and they asked specifically for gifts that are keepsakes. We got them a super nice original wooden Scrabble game and I need to get it engraved in four hours but I can't think of anything cute or clever to write on the engraving and I'd like to do something a little better than just their names and wedding date.

Please let me know any ideas at all. The gift is a very nice Scrabble board game.

PLZ HELP!!! Military BF...Deployed .. Gift Idea Needed..!!!!?...

...OK, I've been dating my bf for about 3 months now. He's a very down to earth kinda guy, romantic, funny, and he's really just a cool person in general. He really likes movies, music,.. etc.. but he has an MP3 player and he buys his own movies over there.. so it makes no sense for me to send him any music or movies. I'd send myself for his entertainment, but I cant do that..lol j/k Anyway.. I cant send him clothes b/c all they are allowed to wear are their uniforms and the stuff that they sleep in. That was my original idea, but now I'm back to square one with this. he has a digital camera, they probably already have video games and magazines, etc. All that entertainment stuff. He's been in Kuwait for 2 months already and is supposed to be there for 4 more months. He's so sweet, he already buys me gifts and I feel really bad.. I want to start getting him some nice stuff while he's over there too. I'm usually great at finding nice gifts, but I'm seriously stomped about this! Any ideas?
(question posted on 2006-05-03 10:49:04)

"Okay, I have been in the Military and deployed. When ever I got something from home, it didn't matter what it was, just that it was from home.

I would suggest books if he likes to read, they help to pass the time. Pictures are great, cuz he can show off his girl to his buddies (just keep them clean because his buddies will see them). Posters are great, especially of things from home like the local sports studs. Hallmark cards with a really nice sentimental touch are good. And yes, food items are wonderfull, everyone in his unit will enjoy that, but they do get lots of them too.

Keep in mind it has to be small so he can keep it in his living area."

Good gift idea for over-worked friend?...

...I have a friend who had to work all weekend (20 hours). She also works during the week. She's a college student, and she has to write four papers due Monday. It was at Olive Garden, and they wouldn't let her leave at her normal shift. She came back around 10 p.m today, trying not to cry.

I want to give her little gift...not a "gift" but a small "pick me up." I'm thinking some good instant coffee and a card that says, "I hope you never have to write four papers a night again...but if it happens, here's some caffeine. At least it'll taste good? Don't work too hard. Love, (insert my name here). " Also, maybe aromatherapy lotion or something.

Please let me know of other gift ideas. Don't simply comment with "Oh, that's a good idea." I want something new.
Wow, that massage sounds good....but I'm also a poor college student:(
I did offer to help her on her papers...but her major is athletic training

I'm a pysch major:(

What is the perfect gift?...

...My best friend is moving away within a month. She recently broke up with her boyfriend, and today she put in her two weeks notice at work. What's more, I'm in love with her. I told her this recently, though we're still just good friends. Doesn't look like that's going to change, but I want to give her something to remember me by. I was thinking something like a promise ring or a pendant, though I know next to nothing when it comes to jewelry. I was also thinking maybe something with her birthstone, which is the emerald. So, would anyone out there care to give me any suggestions or reccomendations on the perfect gift for the woman I love? Specifically any advice on where to look? I'll try to keep in touch with her, though odds are I'll never see her again. And I want her to know I will always love her. And that I'll always be there for her. I love her, and I don't want her to forget me. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.
I have an idea (namely jewelry) but I am lacking in knowledge (Where, what, etc...). Though any other reccomendations are welcome, thanks!

"Guys collect stuff. We have different interests in life and that makes it fun too.

Find out what else he collects and then add to his collection in the form of a gift.

Giving a gift card and all with money in it is fine and all, but what would really turn his crank is that you take the time to buy him something and make sure it is wrapped."

"ok..try this..shower gel..or maybe perfume..

good luck!~"

"That depends on how long you've been with him for, and at 18, a $40 gift card is more than enough. I think he'll appreciate that you thought of what he likes, regardless of if you picked out something specific. I know my b/f is very particular about his hats so I don't even try."

"How long have you been with him? You dont want him running back to his 'boys" bragging about what you got him.....what did he do for you on your birthday??
think about that?
good luck,

"I am a romantic, you already have a gift for your man. How about a romantic evening in. If you live on you own or he has his own place, the perfect evening would be a home cooked meal, hot bubble bath, champagne, strawberries, candles and where the night takes you after that all I can say is enjoy. Pamper your man, let him know how much you love and care for him (not that he does not already know that). Have a great evening and Enjoy ;o)"

"I would suggest that you give him something he'd really like (and yet he still haven't had).. just like what you have in mind right now - hats. You can also buy a his and hers stuffs (like matching hats, a black/blue/brown for him and something girly for you that you can wear together). If you're artistic enough, you may opt to come up with a personal touch.. like a scrapbook of your pictures together starting from how your met, with your and/or friends, then with your and/or his family.
Anyway, I still think you can get him anything, he'll appreciate it as long as it came from your heart. To top your gift, spend a whole day of just total quality time with him will make him totally forget about the gift. =)
I hope you two enjoy his special day!"

Gift idea for a guitar lover?...

...I wanted to piece together a puzzle of a guitar, frame it, and give it as a gift. However, I can't find a puzzle. Any ideas? Gifts for a guitar lover...from a new girlfriend.
He has about 3 or 4 guitars already and we are in a new relationship...

A gift certificate to a music store such as Sam Ash or Guitar Center. There is lots of gear, tablature, and instructional videos, etc. that a guitar enthusiast might also be interested. A new guitar might not be a great idea, since you are unlikely to pick out what he'd be interested in, and he may already be partial to his current guitar.

"Well, they can never have too many picks (spelling unknown)...and if all else fails, buy him a new guitar strap with his favorite band on it or that you'll think he'll like. Good luck! :)"

"Get him some picks. Not just your regular old picks, but some picks with pictures on them that would remind him of you. Picks with sheet music of his favorite songs."

"Go to BERLINGER.COM and pick out what ever you want.. I myself being a guitar player can say your best bet would give hin a Gift cift. and let him get what he wants..He just may have it all....Your friend in Tennessee...ROB"

"Coming from a guitarist, the puzzle idea is cute, but you could do better.

Since you're looking into a puzzle framed, I'm guessing your budget is fairly low. You might be able to find an inexpensive effects pedal for $40. Get a quality brand though, and don't get a pedal he already has.

If your budget is lower than that, look into a guitar slide, they're like $5 and are very fun. A capo is also a handy little tool. About the same price. Also, they sell Gripmasters which build up finger strength, they're about the same price as well.

A set of strings is a bad idea unless you know much about guitars. Likewise for an amp. You might end up buying something shitty, even if it's a recommendation from the storeowner who might be experienced, it may not be suitable for his style of music."

"The puzzle is a nice idea. If you want to get something practical, a set of strings is actually a good idea, just ask what kind your boyfriend prefers. My man plays bass and always digs a new set of strings. A guitar tuner is also a well-appreciated gift. CDs of his favorite music are nice. Also, if you can find a Fender T-shirt, that might be an idea. There are a million things you could get, many of them inexpensive...just ask him! :)"
